PTV launches English channel on 29 January 2013

According to the report of Journalism Pakistan, Pakistan Television’s (PTV) English language channel, PTV World, is all set to launch on 29 January 2013.

Earlier, PTV’s Managing Director Yousuf Baig Mirza, announced the launch of channel as he flew in from Islamabad to Karachi to speak with journalists at the PTV Karachi Station that their latest initiative (PTV’s English channel) would be on air in January 2013.

According to the report, President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari will inaugurate the new channel. The channel will air news, entertainment programs and current affairs.

Yousuf Baig Mirza revealed that the channel comes with a capital investment of Rs300 million. This amount is being added with the income that is generated by the PTV Sports channel.

He further explains that it is a difficult initiative and a challenge. It would not be commercially feasible.

Previously, two full time English language channels were found in Pakistan but  they found it difficult to survive.

ptvThe first English language news channel in Pakistan was Dawn News. This channel worked for three years. Then due to the decline in profits and reduced demand of viewers it was converted into normal Urdu language.

The second locally operated English language channel was Express 24/7. This channel worked for almost 30 months but due to the decreasing returns and less viewers’ interest it stopped working and went off air.
