Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy honoured with Crystal Award at World Economic Forum

Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy is an Emmy and Oscar award-winning Pakistani Canadian journalist and documentary filmmaker.

On 22nd of January 2013, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy was given the important ‘Crystal Award’ by Hilde Schwab at the 2013 World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, for her efforts in promoting human rights and women’s issues through film.

She was presented the ‘Crystal Award’ at the official Crystal Award ceremony which was held at the World Economic Forum Congress Centre, Congress Hall in Davos, Switzerland.

Alongside Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, the session awarded Charlize Theron, actress and founder of the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project and Vik Muniz, artist and member Global Agenda Council, on the Role of the Arts in Society.

The ceremony was chaired by Hilde Schwab, Chairperson and Co-Founder, Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship. Past winners include A R Rahman, Amitabh Bachan, Muhammad Ali, Yvonne Chaka Chaka and Richard Gere.

In 1995 The World Economic Forum introduced the Crystal Award to honour those personalities who are committed as  cultural leaders and global citizens, to improve the state of the world.

The Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum is considered as a significant universal platform for all stakeholders of society in order to provide leaders from different fields, keeping in mind the political, economic, societal  and technological issues.

It brings 2000 top leaders together relating different walks of life like government, media, business, academia, science, the arts and civil society in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland. It gathers the top leaders to form the worldwide schedule of the forthcoming year.

pakPakistan based Canadian journalist Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy shows her true feelings with Pakistan and Pakistani designers, wearing clothes and accessories from Pakistani designers.

She can be seen carrying clutch having Pakistani flag on it. It is a handmade clutch made by Pakistani designers. She also seems wearing Pakistani dress.

She told The Express Tribune. “The crystal award is special because this is the first time a Pakistani is being honoured at the World Economic Forum. I feel proud to represent my country and showcase the fact that educated empowered women are making strides in Pakistan.”

Sharmeen Obaid explains her feelings that she feels proud to represent Pakistan at international level. She expresses that quest of art and film can change the world with the promotion of dialogue and acting as a substance to bring change in the community. She expresses her favour for power of film to change the mindsets of Pakistani people instead of taking life threatening and risky steps to bring change in the community.

On 23 March 2012, Pakistani President conferred the Hilal-e-Imtiaz to Obaid-Chinoy, for bringing honour to Pakistan as a filmmaker. She has also been awarded with the Livingston Award for Young Journalists.
