In Pakistan Teachers’ Day is celebrated annually on 5th October to celebrate the essential role of teachers in providing quality education at all levels.  The day focuses for providing quality training to teachers‚ focusing on their professional development  and protection for their rights.

This year ‘Teachers Day’ is celebrated today, with full devotion.

In Islamabad the Ministry of Education and Training has organized a special function titled “Salam Teachers Day”. Each institution sent about 9 teachers on the occasion to the National Library Islamabad to celebrate the function of “Teachers Day”.

UNESCO Islamabad has also organized a series of functions for “Teachers Day”. Different functions and seminars are being held in Islamabad institutions like at Islamabad College for Girls F-6/2, Allama Iqbal Open University etc.

The idea of celebrating ‘Teachers Day’ was implemented in 1994 during the government of General Musharraf that media started to highlight the difficulties of teachers.

In Pakistan teachers are facing a lot of problems such as suitable accommodation, transportation and absence of training for professional development and unawareness of modern teaching techniques.

There is shortage of teaching jobs and when any one can get job then he/she has to wait for her salary for a long period of time.

When teachers were asked to comment on ‘teachers Day’, they said that the teacher community has been made the most deprived group of society. Teachers are paid very less income therefore they have to rely on tuitions.

The teachers have been forced to live a sub-standard way of life because of unavailability of their rightful privileges.

To overcome the problem of housing, a teacher of H-9 College said: “There is a lot of unused land in many of the Federal Governments Colleges and Schools. It could be utilized for building flats and residences for teachers.”

The whole society revolves around the teacher. Government should pay special attention on this critical issue and made efforts to keep teachers motivated and sincere with their profession.
